Give plants the best chance - timing is everything

Depending on the type of plant you want to plant - there are 2 main best times to plant - Autumn and Spring.  Some plants require warmer temperatures to start growing well - tender bedding plants and many sorts of vegetables - will need the warmth of spring and summer to grow well and so planting them out in spring is a good time.

For more established potted shrubs and plants - the best time to plant is generally in the Autumn or Spring.  Autumn is the best time because the plants will have time to get established with regular natural watering before the dryer summer months.  If planting potted shrubs in summer - they will likely need more watering and care depending on their location.

When planting any shrub or potted plant into the garden - give it a good water to get it established. Then it may need more watering depending on when you planted it.  Summer months will require a closer eye - to make sure the plant gets properly established.

The best time to move established garden plants - is in the dormant period - this being the winter months.  This gives the plant a long time to recover before the dryer summer months.

If transplanting a very well established plant with a large root system - if you have time - cut around the root ball of the plant with a spade the previous season before moving.  This will force the plant to produce a more compact root system, ready for moving in the following Autumn.

When planting - don't be afraid to have a go.  You may well find you do have green fingers!!

Till next time - Happy Gardening,

Sage.
